How To Beat a Fat Loss Plateau

Many of us have experienced this; you feel like you’re having a successful weight loss journey, you’ve dropped 15 then 20 then 30 pounds and suddenly it stops. Your healthy habits haven’t changed, in fact, you’re working harder than ever. The pounds have just stopped shedding.

Typically that is because when your body is being trained to build up more muscle, it doesn’t have as much time to focus on burning the remaining fat that is underneath it. In today’s post, we are going to uncover why you could be hitting this frustrating fat loss plateau and the ways you can start to bypass it. We always want to encourage our readers not to lose hope. Even if you have hit an unbeatable wall, there are ways to still get your ideal shape.

How a fat loss plateau happens:

  • The ebbs and flows of natural weight loss: When starting a weight loss journey it is normal to have a rapid drop, especially if you’re working hard right off the gate towards your goal. This is because your body needs new energy and it gets that by releasing its stores of glycogen. Glycogen is a type of carbohydrate made from water and found in the muscles and the liver. This tricks you into thinking that this water weight is fat being burned. The important thing is to not let that rapid drop fool your brain into thinking that this process will be easy and that this is how your weight loss journey is going to continue to be this simple. Ultimately if you fall into that trap you could end up getting frustrated when what appears to be that first plateau arrives. This could lead to you giving up early and tossing away the potential to feel better about yourself. It’s crucial to remember the goal isn’t just to look better but to feel better too.

  • You have more muscle than you thought: The body has to work twice as hard to burn away muscle. It’s important when trying to lose weight to balance your workouts. If you’re weightlifting on a daily basis you may not be getting the body shape you’re after. It’s best to do your research to learn the gym schedule you should follow so that your body burns calories versus building up muscle.
  • Slower metabolism: If you have a slower metabolism your body will struggle with weight loss. It’s not to say that it is impossible, that’s not the case. But you will need to put in extra steps or tweak your routine to trick your metabolism. You may need to adjust your workout routine or calorie intake.

How to bypass plateaus and get your desired shape:

Once you’ve determined you have hit a plateau, it is time to start reevaluating. Play around with your routines. This could look like adjusting your calorie intake and/or adding more activity to your days. Don’t stress about the situation too much. Experiment with your weight loss tactics and that could be enough to shake you from that plateau.
